THE NEXT BIG THING - 2010
Each week Pete introduces a new band are artists that we think are set for the big time, including a selection of top local bands. With a New Year just a round the corner it's time to name the artists we think will make it big during 2010.....
Marina & The Diamonds
Received critical acclaim last year for their limited edition EPs, Mowgli's Road and Obsessions, the band are now signed to 679, the same label that launched Little Boots last year, They release their first full single 'Hollywood' on February 8th, with their debut album 'The Family Jewels' following a week later.

Hurts
Manchester based duo Hurts are the first signing to new Sony label 'Major Label' and will be releasing their eighties-tinged electronic pop on the UK in the spring with debut single 'Wonderful Life'. If you want a sneak preview look out for a limited edition Arthur Baker remix of the track which is doing the rounds now on vinyl! They will also play their first lives shows in February in London, Manchester, Cologne and Berlin.

Alex Gardner
Signed to the A&M label which is also home to Duffy, Alex Gardner is the latest artist to emerge from the prolific Xenomania stable. He releases his debut single 'I'm Not Mad' in March with a debut album to follow in June. He will also be playing high profile support slots with Paolo Nutini and The Script.

Ellie Goulding
It's just been announced that Ellie is the winner of the 2010 Crtics Choice Award at The Brits, the award which last year went to Florence & The Machine. The 22 year old was born in Wales, lives in Hereford and has spent much of 2009 recording her debut album in New York under the production talents of Mark Ronson. She has already performed her debut single 'Under The Sheets' on Later...with Jools Holland.

Daisy Dares You
Still just 16 years old, Daisy releases her debut single 'Number One Enemy' in February followed by a second single and album in May. She will also spend February out on the road supporting label mate Chipmunk on his first headline tour of the UK. She's been described by Sony/ATV Managing Director Rak Sanghvi as one of the most exciting talents to emerge in the UK for ages.

Owl City
Owl City is actually musician and producer Adam Young from Minnesota in the States. He began making music in his parents basement whilst making a living at the local Coca-Cola factory! He released his debut EP back in 2007, followed by an album 'Dreaming Of Me' a year later. His big breakthrough came in November 2009 when single 'Fireflies' topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Now signed to Island Records in the UK, he looks guaranteed to end 2010 as a worldwide star.

Girls Can't Catch
Phoebe, Jess and Daizy arrived on the scene in 2009 with debut single 'Keep You Head Up' which reached #26 in the charts. It is, however, second single 'Echo' due for release in January 2010 that looks set to secure their status as household names alongside labelmates Girls Aloud and The Saturdays. They have already supported Girls Aloud and Jonas Brothers on UK tours and will release their debut album later this year, which will include a track written by Pixie Lott. You may we recognise Phoebe from the band - she finished 5th on the X-Factor a couple of years back as part of 'Hope'.

The Drums
A long shot for success on 2010 but definitely a band worth checking out. The Drums were formed from the ashes of cult acts Elkland and Goat Explosion in Brooklyn, New York by frontman Jonathan Pierce and guitarist Jacob Graham. They released their debut 'Summertime EP' last year which also featured the single 'Let's Go Surfing' earning them a deal with UK record label 'Moshi Moshi'. Their first full album is expected later in 2010 with a further tour promised - you may have caught them on the road last year supporting 'White Lies'.
